The results from field trials in the Merredin district indicated that barley will generally outyield wheat by 15 per cent on soil types ranging from sandy loam to sandy clay loam. Other findings include : barley has greater yield potential in general than wheat in this environment ; where soil salinity regimes existed barley yield was greater than wheat ; no other soil chemical properties were clearly associated with relative yield on the range of soils used ; barley will benefit from early sowing on bot
