Once highly productive, the two main pasture legumes for the low rainfall portion of the northern wheatbelt now fail to persist because of increased aphid attack. Both Cyprus barrel medic grown on the red clay-loams Harbinger strand medic on the yellow sandplain soils have been severely affected. A previous project (DAW 42) identified a number of potential replacements for Cyprus and Harbinger. Project DAW 36 and its successor, DAW 173, were set up to enable these legumes to be evaluated as part of gra
phid tolerant medic (M. Trunculata cv. Parabinga) at the red clay-loam site. The full impact of this improved pasture legume technology will emerge in the next three years during DAW 173.
