A main focus of the study was the assessment of enterprises that specifically address issues of sustainability, namely the treatment of non-wetting soils and the role of perennials in reducing the watertable and hence reduce the rate of spread of dryland salinity. These issues were assessed with a whole farm model that explicitly accounts for enterprise interactions which optimise profit on south coastal farms in Western Australia. The model would incorporate the most profitable rotations for eight land nagement units, evaluate new grain legumes, which also improve wheat quality and target feed manufacturing barley markets.
