Disappearance of ammonium nitrogen was affected by both soil type and source of nitrogen, being most rapid in soils with higher pH and very slow on very acid soils. Disappearance was slower where ammonium sulphate was the nitrogen source than where ammonium nitrate or urea were used. Two hundred and three old nitrogen trial sites were relocated and pegged. To date soil sampling has been carried out in wet soil to determine the upper drained moisture limit and soil bulk density, on 184 of these sites. Samp
