Selection and control lines for increased pre-weaning growth rate were established from Hereford and multibreed cattle. From 1978 to 1989, there was an increase in weaning weight of calves of approximatley 2.5 kg/year in the Hereford and 2.7 kg/year in the multibreed selection line. Changes in Breedplan EBV's for the direct and maternal components of pre-weaning growth over the same period, suggest that about 50% of this increase in weaning weight resulted from permanent genetic improvement.
