Abstract: Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the use of the antibiotic Viginiamycin as an additive when grain is fed weekly as a supplement to a roughage based diet In the first experiment individually penned steers were fed, 0, 1, 4 or 6 kg barley daily or, with Virginiamycin, equivalent amounts at weekly intervals. Hay was available ad libitum. The cattle fed no grain 0.32 kg/d. With increasing above mentioned intake of grain, cattle fed daily gained at 0.56, 0.72, 0.86 and 0.94 kg/day respectively as comred with 0.50, 0.75, 0.83 and 0.83 kg/day for those fed at weekly intervals.
