The Rural Towns Program was established in 1996 to help rural communities tackle townsite salinity caused by rising groundwater tables. The Community Boreholes Project is part of the Rural Towns Program and is aimed at studying groundwater movement and aquifer characteristics in each town. It will be used to test the effectiveness of various salinity treatments. Control options include tree planting, surface water management, remnant vegetation management and groundwater pumping.
