In the dryland agricultural areas of Western Australia seasonal fluctuations in rainfall necessitates the design of reliable on-farm water supples so that the farming enterprise can continue to function in years with low rainfall. This Farmnote covers the concept of reliability in farm water supply design, estimated livestock carrying capacity of farmland, how to evaluate existing supplies (including dams, raintank systems, domestic water supplies and crop-spraying requirements) and groundwater supplies.
