Abstract: Comparisons of abnormal quarters with neighbouring normal quarters revealed that quarters with clinical mastitis averaged 6.05 lb milk less than their normal neighbours. Quarters with subclinical mastitis gave 2.0 lb less. The economic loss due to clinical mastitis assuming (i) its incidence to be 6.79 per cent of quarters, (ii) an average of 110,000 milking cows, with (iii) an average of 250 milking days would be about $1,600,000 per annum for Western Australia.
