A dry sandy soil from Gabalong W.A., when sampled in summer, yielded between 1275 and 4425kg of water soluble materials per hectare. Of the substances extracted, approximately 30 percent were anthrone sensitive. The water soluble organic matter(WSOM) was distributed throughout the particle size ranges when fractionated by dry sieving of the soil. The carbohydrates in the WSOM were similar in their behaviour to precipitation by metal ions in association with humic materials. In soil respiration studies
