Trials were located over a wide range of soil types and environments, however the major effects of tillage were similar at most locations : Direct drilling markedly changed the distribution of nutrients in the soil and lead to higher concentrations of extractable P, extractable K, total N and organic C in the surface layers of the soil; changes occurred soon after the adoption of direct drilling; nitrogen application depressed the pH of poorly buffered soils; and the higher concentration of nutrients near
