Abstract: The effects of the energy deficit of the animal as well as the packing density and palatability of a forage on the upper limit to rumen digesta load in sheep were examined. The rumen digesta load of the ram lambs declined as the total quantity of nutrients infused increased, which suggesting that rumen digesta load is positively related to the energy deficit of the animal. Reducing the particle length of a wheaten hay from 21.1 to 4.2 mm, resulted in an increase in both the voluntary consumption of hay
