The area ripped and the number of farmers adopting ripping has shown a quite rapid increase since 1982 with a levelling off in the late 1980s. Generally, few of the farmers have dropped ripping as a practice on their farm. Seasonal conditions have a large effect on the level of grain yield responses from deep ripping. Farmers agree that sandy soils produce the most consistent cereal responses to ripping. Deep ripping produced wheat crops yielding an average 390 kg/ha more than those with normal cultiv
