Compound 1080 is highly toxic to most vertebrates. In 1944, 1080 was found to occur in plants in South Africa which were known to be poisonous to livestock. It was not known until 10 years after it was first used in Australia that it also occurred naturally in native plants which occur over a large area of this country. Most of the more than 30 species which contain 1080, are only found in the southwest of Western Australia. Most species of native animals in the southwest have evolved a high level of tolence to 1080 through feeding on the plants which contain the poison.
