Abstract: Urea or calcium nitrate were topdressed at the equivalent of 75 kg N/ha on to the surface of one metre long columns filled with either yellow sand (Badgingarra soil), yellow loamy sand (Wongan Hills soil) or red-bown sandy loam (Beverley soil). The soils were either at field capacity or were dry, and two levels of water were applied to the surface after fertiliser application. After the water finished draining, the soils were sampled in 10 cm intervals and chemically analysed to determine urea-N, ammonium
