Abstract: Findings suggest that there is no simple cause of the stunted patch syndrome in lupins. This problem may be due to a compounding of several different stresses, including those caused by high soil aluminium, low phosphorus and low potassium. The disorder cannot be eliminated by ripping and/or phosphate banding, although ripping reduces the extent of patchiness by breaking up the layer of hard soil about 10 to 12 cm below the soil surface, just one of the stresses contributing to the patch problem. This y not apply at sites where a shallow layer of high mechanical strength is not present.
