Fluoroacetate is a highly toxic compound which is produced by three genera of plants in parts of south western and northern Australia, particularly the south west corner of Western Australia. Native animals in these regions have coexisted with this toxic vegetation for at least several thousand years, and many species have developed a marked tolerance to fluoroacetate. Factors incluencing their level of tolerance, the possible casual mechanisms, and the implications to fauna management are discussed.
