The aim of this study was to determine the external P requirements of burr medic on the marginally acidic, medium textured soils and of yellow serradella on the acidic, light textured soils. This was done by comparing their responses to applied P to those of either subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) or wheat (Triticum aestivum), two species for whom we already have a large pool of historic data. The criteria used to compare the different species were firstly, the amount of applied P required for ptake at low P supply, the lowest root : shoot ratio and the longest, thinnest root system. Burr medic, on the other hand, had the lowest P uptake at low P supply, the highest root : shoot ratio and the shortest, thickest root system of the 3 legumes. W
