Data clearly shows there is no sound evidence to implicate horticulture in the Peel-Harvey catchment as a major pollution source. Notwithstanding this, horticulture is one of the many land uses contributing nutrients to the Peel-Harvey system, and a reduction in this contribution is desirable. Discussion within government on the environmental impact of horticulture, and the development of strategies to reduce that impact, have taken place for many years. Research to develop improved fertilizer and irrition strategies is being undertaken. Growers, such as those represented by the Peel Horticultural Landcare Group, have not been involved in this process to any significant extent.
