Australian agriculture is heavily dependent on Mediterranean legumes. Subterranean clover and the annual medics are essential components of pastures in the wheat belt and high rainfall areas, while peas and lupins are grown as grain legumes in rotations with wheat. Even so, productivity is probably limited by restricted genetic diversity within species, and by the limited number of species in use.
