Although the Indian sub-continent is the largest producer of pulses, these countries are also the greatest consumers and importers. After several decades of low-key research and development, pulses are likely to gain a significant and profitable place in Western Australian farming systems. Given a medium term outlook, the potential is for 0.5 million ha of pulses in W.A. by the year 2000 and possibly 1 million ha within a decade.
