Three field trials and one glasshouse trail were carried out to investigate the effect of seed nitrogen concentration on growth, nitrogen content and grain yield of wheat, in the presence and absence of fertiliser N. There was a response in growth and grain yield at Wongan Hills, Medina and in the glasshouse, to applied urea, while there was little response at Mount Barker. Except for the Mount Barker site there were early dry matter responses to increasing seed N concentration, but none of these effects rried through to grain yield. Early nitrogen uptake in the wheat tops also increased with increasing seed N concentration at Medina.
