A disease which resulted in the death of over 500 cattle in the north-west of Australia in 1994 was identified as a new mycotoxicosis. It occurred when cattle ate conidiomata (referred to as 'corals') of the fungus Corallocytostroma sp. (suggested species name is ornicopreoides), which were found in large numbers on Mitchell grass in some areas. Toxin(s) produced by the fungus damaged the kidneys, liver and forestomachs, predominantly. The disease was named black soil blindness because affected cattle appred blind and the infected Mitchell grass was closely associated with black soil areas.
