In all seasons, and across al experimental sites that were responsive to manganese (Mn) fertiliser, the deep placed (12-15 cm below the soil surface) Mn fertiliser was significantly better than topdressed Mn for the seed yield and split seed produced by Lupinus angustifolius L. Where the top soil dried during seed formation and pod filling the deep placed Mn fertiliser resulted in less split seed and higher seed yields. On sites where the response to Mn fertiliser was small (<20% seed yield response) th m split seed levels. Generally, there was a much poorer relationship between Mn in the whole top of the lupin plant sampled at eight weeks and the resultant seed yield and level of split seed produces at maturity. There was a linear relationship betwe
