Although the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) (Diptera: Muscidae) has been present in Western Australia since the early 1900's it has only emerged as a significant problem to livestock (cattle and horses) and humans since the late 1980's. Both the severity and extent of stable fly outbreaks have increased around metropolitan regions of Perth in recent years.
