The Damara is a fat tail sheep breed, introduced to Western Australia in 1996 from South Africa. The breed's natural attributes of short hair, long legs, fat tail and hardiness have developed mainly through natural selection on the African continent and ten years of breeding and selection refinement in South Africa. The characteristics outlines below are typical of the pure bred Damara. Western Australia is currently in the early breeding stages of the Damara industry and significant, commercial sized pro ction of the pure bred is not expected until 2002-2003. Currently, Western Australian production is limited to the first and second cross Damara (F1 and F2), with increased production of the third and fourth cross (F3 and F4) expected in the next two to
racteristics such as a fatter tail and a multicoloured, hairier coat. It should be noted that the F1 Damara-Merino cross may require shearing, and that the fleece is of no commercial value.
